The Cavaliers fired coach J.B. Bickerstaff on May 23 and are searching for his successor.

Bickerstaff went170-159 and 6-11 in the playoffs in four-plus seasons at the helm of the Cavs, who this year defeated the Orlando Magic 4-3 in Round 1 of the postseason before falling 4-1 to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Cleveland Cavaliers head coach search: Cavs given permission to interview Johnnie Bryant, Chris Quinn

The Cavaliers have been given permission to interview New York Knicks associate head coach Johnnie Bryant and Miami Heat top assistant Chis Quinn, according to an ESPN report.

Bryant has been the Knicks' associate head coach for the past four seasons while New York has become a contender in the East.

But the most intriguing part of Bryant's past, as it pertains to the Cavaliers, is his time with the Utah Jazz, where he formed a close relationship with Cavs star Donovan Mitchell.

Cavs president of basketball operations Koby Altman recently said he'd welcome Mitchell's feedback during their search for a new head coach. Bryant might receive an endorsem*nt from Mitchell, which makes him a key player during this search.

Quinn just finished his 10th season as an assistant coach for the Heat and is the longest tenured assistant under head coach Erik Spoelstra. He's also played a major role in the franchise's player development program.

In 2021-22, Quinn acted as head coach for three game when Spoelstra was unavailable, leading the Heat to a 2-1 record during that time.

The Cavs were granted permission to interview assistant coaches Kenny Atkinson of the Golden State Warriors and James Borrego of the New Orleans Pelicans, a league source told the Beacon Journal on May 29, confirming a report by ESPN.

Atkinson, 56, and Borrego, 46, have head coaching experience in the NBA. Their names are attached to the first known interviews secured by the Cavs.

Atkinson went 118-190 in three-plus regular seasons spanning 2016-20 at the helm of the Brooklyn Nets. He guided the 2018-19 Nets to the playoffs and a 4-1 first-round loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Atkinson spent the past three seasons as an assistant to Warriors coach Steve Kerr. In 2022, he accepted the head coaching job of the Charlotte Hornets before changing his mind and staying with the Warriors. He also worked as an assistant for a season with the Los Angeles Clippers (2020-21), four seasons with the Atlanta Hawks (2012-16) and four seasons with the New York Knicks (2008-12). For one season, he was the director of player development of the Houston Rockets (2007-08).

As a player, Atkinson starred at the University of Richmond before playing professionally for 14 years (1990-2004). He played in the CBA and USBL before competing for teams in France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Spain.

Borrego went 10-20 as the interim coach of the Magic in 2015 and 138-163 in four seasons as the head coach of the Hornets (2018-2022).

Borrego spent this past season with the Pelicans, who gave him the title of associate head coach. He began his NBA career as an assistant video coordinator with the San Antonio Spurs before the 2003-04 season and then spent seven seasons with the Spurs, ascending to an assistant coach under Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich.
