You don't need Jaguar to get a reasonable frequency reading, while Jaguar may get you an extra decimal place, the standard UI is fine if calibrated. 73 KAZ

What is the offset that you observed on 820? WBKK is listedas 819.9916 which should be pretty distinctive. (although thatreading is over a couple of years old)

This is acase where you just may have to wait for a time (probably at sunset inboth Columbus, Ohio and Wilton, Minnesota) to see if you can catch ANYlocal mentions or even advertisem*nts of local underwriters to know forsure which one you have.

The two stations have sunset times that, this time of year, are an hourapart. WVSG's sunset time for April is 2015 EDT and in May is 2045EDT. WBKK's sunset time for April is 2115 EDT and in May is 2145EDT.

"EWTN Open Line" mostly under CHAM. Not findinganything that fits to my satisfaction
820 WVSG OH Columbus listed as EWTN in NRC Log, but station Web siteindicates San Gabriel Radio is the slogan, and not EWTN Open Line at thistime.
820 WPGO NY Horseheads is Family Life Radio, not Catholic
820 WBKK MN Wilton shows Open Line at 1400 CDT, so it fits, butMinnesota is a long way from here. Station slogan is Real Presence Radio,a Catholic network. NRC Log indicates RPR/EWTN. One other possiblyimportant factor is my 600 wire is aimed west, though with seemingly goodresults from stations to the east.
Any thoughts?

Excellent report Bill, lots of detail.

When you have it completed, besides posting on the lists, do you plan to have a website posting as Bruce Conti did with his eclipse loggings?

I'll assist if necessary.

Some stations I had forgot about being active such as 600 in Montreal. Totally absent here, even during the eclipse. Aiming NW hits me with a lot of slop from 590 WEZE. Way too much action from the south on 600 at night (Cuba, Colombia, WYEL PR, WBOB FL for starters).

Geographic coordinates of the VT DXpedition site might be worth including.

This time with the city and state/province….

This might be my first DX report to IRCA and like many others have reported, it has been a fun event to DX. Reviewing the SDR captures has been slow going but I wanted to share what I have so far.

The day after the October 2023 eclipse I booked an Airbnb in Northern Vermont for the April 8th eclipse and the place turned out to be very low noise (daytime NYC 50kw’s at 283 miles!) with plenty of space for the Superloop. I was able to put the Superloop 150 feet away from the house and did my usual 20’x60’ loop aimed at 245 degrees (along the path of totality) with the termination set so the back end wasn’t nulled. Although so far I’ve received very little off the northeast side.

Perseus with Jaguar v9 captured non-stop for 2 days to ensure things were warmed up and that timed recordings didn’t fail (hi Vince, Jim :-). Back at home I’ve tried a new method for reviewing captures. The Desktop PC has a copy of the 3PM-4PM capture files (totality was 3:26-3:29PM) and is using SDR-Console for primary playback and audio capture to MP3. I prefer the audio and waterfall in SDR-Console over Jaguar. The laptop has the original copy of the files and is running Jaguar to look for the strongest carriers and to identify multiple carrier/offsets. It’s working well and has helped id some of the tough ones. I’m also logging the offsets to add to mwoffsets.

Here’s what I’ve been able to compile so far after 2 solid days of reviewing. I keep my DX logs in Excel with 10+ columns of data and what you see below is some of that data merged (hopefully without mistakes) into a single line with an Excel formula. The unID’s have 0mi and 0w but otherwise it should all look good.

Why wait? All mp3 files have been uploaded to Dropbox for your immediate enjoyment. Download or play right off Dropbox.

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/xc21b1vva6fk9tte8xxyb/ACSz9GygQp06LjxuMpyIjUw?rlkey=dl775qoiqxco9jmylxxqe6j40&dl=0

But wait there’s more! You will also find (and can download) an Excel spreadsheet with a dump of the FCC MW database (2nd tab) that includes some Excel magic that will calculate your distance and azimuth to each station. Just enter your coordinates into cells P2 and Q2 (no minus for longitude and only in the Western hemisphere, I think).

Enjoy!

Thanks Mark.

When it’s all complete I will share the Excel spreadsheet and mp3 files. Most likely as a OneDrive or Dropbox download.

Exact co-ordinates of the loop, 44.950738 N, -73.222272 W. A simple Airbnb with a great owner and a nice big backyard for the loop that also has 4000 feet of fields behind that for someone looking to stretch out a nice big BOG (with permission from the owner). Picture (hopefully) attached.

Sending a link to a recording I took using several Kiwi SDRs from 2-3:30 pm ET on 4/8/24 during the Solar Eclipse. Started in Mexico, then later went to Texas, Tennessee, Illinois and upstate New York. The last 30 minutes is primarily the upstate New York SDR tuned to WBZ - I left it there while I went to check out the eclipse myself. Feel free to comb through and send any interesting findings.

I haven't yet gone back through it in full myself, but want to, and also want to record the SDRs on a "regular" weekday as a "control" of sorts.

In addition to WRQX 600 Patriot Radio, Salem OH, I just now found CKLG 570 from Kitchener ON with "City News" at 1916z on April 10. Thiswas just before max totality in Niagara Falls..This may be my closest unheard station, long sought, but always blocked by WSYR Syracuse and WKBN Youngstown. I just checked, and as I recalled, the day and night patternsof CKGL aim north and away from me. I guess it took once in a lifetime conditions to get it! For those keeping track, these are #2733 and #2734 in the log book.

Also just found an unusual reception of WVNE 760 at around 1915, deep under WJR. An ACLJ program that does not match any another station on 760. This was about six minutes before max totality at my home. It's quite evident at 1930, but it seems like my west wire was able to catch this much earlier than expected. Oh, now I see why ... it operates with 25 kw before critical hours.

This might be my first DX reportto IRCA and like many others have reported, it has been a fun event toDX. Reviewing the SDR captures has been slow going but I wanted to sharewhat I have so far.

The day after the October 2023 eclipse I booked an Airbnb in NorthernVermont for the April 8th eclipse and the place turned out tobe very low noise (daytime NYC 50kw’s at 283 miles!) with plenty of spacefor the Superloop. I was able to put the Superloop 150 feet away from thehouse and did my usual 20’x60’ loop aimed at 245 degrees (along the pathof totality) with the termination set so the back end wasn’t nulled.Although so far I’ve received very little off the northeastside.

Perseus with Jaguar v9 captured non-stop for 2 days to ensure things werewarmed up and that timed recordings didn’t fail (hi Vince, Jim :-). Backat home I’ve tried a new method for reviewing captures. The Desktop PChas a copy of the 3PM-4PM capture files (totality was 3:26-3:29PM) and isusing SDR-Console for primary playback and audio capture to MP3. I preferthe audio and waterfall in SDR-Console over Jaguar. The laptop has theoriginal copy of the files and is running Jaguar to look for thestrongest carriers and to identify multiple carrier/offsets. It’s workingwell and has helped id some of the tough ones. I’m also logging theoffsets to add to mwoffsets.

Eclipse DX from Northern Vermont

WICC was surprisingly strong after 1923. Remains to be seen if Caribou ME appears post 1933. Good reception from WZAN 970, and 870 WLVP, as early as 1923, not to mention an NDB from FrederictionNB.

A productivechannel has been 870: WHCU, WKAR, WPWT, WLVP

Ben Shapiro ... meh. I'd be a lot happier hearing '60s schoolgirl superstar Helen Shapiro coming out of my radio instead.

I certainly heard more than my fair share of wingnut talk content during this daytime listening adventure.

600 WRQX OH Salem "The Patriot" with the very unpleasant Ben Shapiro Show. New station. Strong signal disappeared by the next Perseus clip at 1923. This was eclipse max here.

One nice thing about these these non-TOH and non-BOH recordings is more local program breaks at eclipse time.

Jim Renfrew, Clarendon NY

1921z

600 WRQX OH Salem "The Patriot" with the very unpleasant Ben Shapiro Show. New station. Strong signal disappeared by the next Perseus clip at 1923. This was eclipse max here.

One nice thing about these these non-TOH and non-BOH recordings is more local program breaks at eclipse time.

Eclipse experience on the AM band

I wasn't sure what to expect with regards to the effect the solar eclipse would have on propagation, or to what degree, but so far I'm amazed at the results. On Monday I did a 7 hour long IQ recording of the AM band while I headed out with my grandson to get as close to the centre line as we could near Lake Erie. I thought my IQ recordings might show a few stations coming up during maximum, but so far I'm hearing an effect on just about every 10kHz. channel that doesn't have a local on it. I've only just started doing a quick listen to my recordings and to date I've got some 20 or so eclipse effect loggings. Maybe in hindsight that shouldn't be a surprise as I'm in a highly populated area which is surrounded by many stations both in Canada and the U.S., and my location is in the path of totality.

I used my SDRplay RSPdx running SDRuno with a Cross Country Wireless active loop antenna. I set up SDRuno to automatically start recording the full AM broadcast band from 11a.m. until 6p.m. my time (1500 to 2200 UTC). This generated 117GB of data. Fortunately all the propagation action takes place around the time the shadow passed over this part of the continent, with the maximum occurring here at 3:19p.m. The rest of the 7 hours is baseline data for comparison.
I also did several 7 hour recordings on the days before and after the eclipse for comparison.

I'm now slogging through the recordings, 10kHz at a time. Stations that I hear at night but not during the day came up quite nicely as the shadow came by. Then there seems to be some stations that I've not picked up before at night but that did come up during eclipse maximum. This would probably be due to the fact that I was receiving them at their higher daytime power level, whereas normally they would be too weak for me to hear at night at their reduced post sunset power level. These would in particular be the "graveyard" channels. Even during the eclipse some graveyard channels were a mess due to numerous stations coming in at the same time. I wondered if the fast moving shadow might help to filter out some stations, which may very well have happened. Even so some channels came up with too many stations. I'll get a better feel for the situation when I go back and listen to these channels again. The "obvious" stations that I hear all the time at night are easy to ID, but the other ones are going to be difficult depending on how long the signals were audible. Some stations came up for several tens of minutes, which made it easier to catch an ID, while others were there only for a few minutes, or were quite weak. I think some of them will probably remain unidentified. Others I can probably take a good guess at depending on what program material I can make out. There's a lot of work ahead of me but I consider this whole exercise to have been a great success. I'll probably be passing along this data to those organizations who requested help with this event.

And oh yeah. The eclipse was amazing. In the past I've seen a number of partial eclipses and one annular eclipse, but this was my first total eclipse This was also the first eclipse of any kind for my grandson. He was totally blown away . It was not only the darkness and the beauty of the visuals, but also the noticeable drop in temperature, and the birds coming home to roost and then having to get up and take off again after only 4 minutes of "night". And being on the north shore of Lake Erie we could easily see the shadow coming at us at almost 2300 mph. Very impressive. If you ever get a chance to experience a total solar eclipse do so. It's amazing.

Cheers,
John
