She had been a lifelong resident of Durham and was formerly employed as a nurse's aide. She was a member of Massey's Chapel United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, Leo R. Scoggins; two sons, Gary Scoggins and Ronnie Scoggins, both of Durham; a brother, Ralph Draughan of Raleigh; and 10 grandchildren. The family will be at Clements Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m.

A native of Berkley, she attended Berkley schools. She moved to Durham in 1935 with her late husband, J. Henry ton, when they established Barton Electric Company which they operated for many years. She was a member of Duke Memorial United Methodist Church and was past president of the Lillie Duke Sunday School Class. She member of the Shrinette Club" of Durham, the Kings Daughters and Club Boulevard Garden Club.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Barton Pendergraft of Durham; a son, James Henry Barton of Miami; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. Mrs. Pearl R. Jones Mrs. Pearl Reeves Jones, 98, of Durham, died this morning in Duke Hospital after a long illness. Mrs.

Sundbeck, former political officer and playwright, dies at 79 CHAPEL HILL Mrs. Mary Catherine Dirnbergee Sundbeck, 79, of 41 Maxwell Road in the Glenn Lenox community, a former political officer for the U.S. Embassy in Rome as well as a playwright and director, died Tuesday afternoon in her home. She was a native of Buffalo, N.Y. and was a 1929 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was active in the Carolina Playmakers.

While in school, she wrote a play titled, "The New Eve," about the aftermath of a war i in which only two people survive. She served as state director for the Federal Theater Project that was associated with the Works Progess Administration during the 1930s. Part of this job involved organizing Little Theater groups throughout the state. She also wrote a pageant that was produced in Hillsborough in 1931, depicting the history of Orange County. In 1939, she began work with the Federal government in Washington and held several jobs before joining the foreign service in 1956.

She was a political officer for the U.S. Embassy in Rome from 1957 until 1962, when she retired. She moved to Chapel Hill in 1963. She wrote of several plays. "Con Amore," was performed by the Playmakers in 1965.

Another of her plays, "'The Scandalous Mrs. Jack," was presented by the Raleigh Little Theater in May 1971. Walter Spearman, retired professor of journalism at UNC, a a a a a a a a friend and former classmate of Mrs. Sundbeck, said, "She was a grand person, a good actor and full of zest for living." Surviving are a son, Dr. Charles R.

Mack of Columbia, S.C.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Rikki Sundbeck Buck and Mrs. Andrea Sundbeck, both of Laguna Hills, a stepson, Peter Sundbeck of Durham; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. During World War II, she served as a Gray Lady for the American Red Cross and also did volunteer work the Durham Veteran's Administration Medical Center for many years. She was a member of St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church and the Hellenic Ladies Society, Surviving are three daughters, Miss Helen Dackis of Washington, Larry Holt of the home and Mrs. Arthur C. Christakos of Durham; a son, William C.
